REDLANDS, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split in the Bulldog Invitation with a 16-2 win over Ottawa and an 11-9 loss to UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 2-6 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer 16, Ottawa 2
The Sagehens were led by Paulina Correa who led the way with four goals for the hat-trick. Aurora Sheridan and Allison Sullivan Wu also tallied hat-tricks with three goals each in the win. Haley Crabtree earned the win in goal for the Sagehens as she stopped 10 balls and came away with three steals.
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a nice start on offense in the first as they scored five goals and held Ottawa scoreless in the first. The Sagehens had three goals inside the first two minutes of the match as Correa, Nadia Paquin and Sullivan Wu tallied their first goals of the day to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer went on to score two more in the first from Correa and Madison Lewis to take a 5-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Ottawa started out the second quarter with a goal to cut the lead down to 5-1 but the Sagehens answered with six-straight goals before halftime. Sheridan got the scoring started for the Sagehens in the second followed by goals from Jessie Nesbit, Katherine Cullen, Sullivan Wu and back-to-back goals from Corra as the Sagehens went into halftime with an 11-1 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer shut out Ottawa for the second time in the third quarter and went on to add three more goals to their total as Bella Phillips, Sullivan Wu and Lewis found the back of the net to extend the lead to 14-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens let off of the gas after taking a large lead in the first three quarters but still managed to outscored their opponent 2-1. Sheridan scored both goals of the quarter for the Sagehens and Ottawa tacked on one late as the Sagehens came away with a big 16-2 win in game one of the Bulldog Invitational.
Pomona-Pitzer 9, UC San Diego 11
The Sagehens were led by Sullivan Wu and Correa who each came away with a hat-trick in the loss with three goals each.
The Tritons started out the match with a goal until Sullivan Wu fired back with back-to-back goals to give the Sagehens an early 2-1 lead. UCSD ended the first quarter with a goal and then went on a run with the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead. The Sagehens scored one goal late in the first half by Cullen but UCSD led 5-3 at the half.
The Sagehens came back to win the third quarter as they outscored the Tritons 4-2. Correa tallied the first two goals for the Sagehens followed by goals from Lucie Abele and Sullivan Wu but UCSD Came back in the fourth to come away with the 11-9 win.
