SAN DIEGO, CA. - - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team went 1-3 in the Triton Invitational with a win over Villanova and losses to UCLA, Santa Clara and UC Davis on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at Canyonview Pool.
Season Impact: The Sagehens move to 1-5 to start the season.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, UCLA 21
The Sagehens took on Division I powerhouse UCLA in game one of the Triton Invitational. The Bruins outscored the Sagehens 4-0 in the first quarter and extended the lead to 6-0 before the Sagehens got their first goal of the game from first-year Paulina Correa. Lucie Abele scored her goal in the third with the Bruins still up 10-2 and that was all the goals that the Sagehens could score against UCLA as they fell in game one of the tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer 8, UC Davis 14
The Sagehens were led by Abele and Corra who each earned a hat-trick in the loss. Abele led the way with four goals and Correa chipped in with three.
The Sagehens got out to a rough start on offense as UC Davis opened up with the first four goals of the game to take a 4-0 lead. The Sagehens got one goal at the end of the first as Corra scored off of a five-meter penalty but the Sagehens failed to score a goal in the second quarter as they trailed at halftime 9-1.
The Sagehens turned up the offense in the third quarter as they outscored UC Davis 4-2. Abele opened up the third with two-straight goals and then the Sagehens ended the third with the final two goals of the quarter from Allison Sullivan Wu and Abele as the Sagehens entered the fourth down 11-5. The Sagehens tied UC Davis with three goals in the fourth and the big first half from UC Davis was the difference as the Sagehens fell 14-8.
Pomona-Pitzer 6, Santa Clara 10
The Sagehens were led by Abele and Correa who each had two goals in the loss.
The Sagehens scored two quick goals in the first from Abele and Correa to start with a 2-0 lead with just two minutes gone in the first. Santa Clara responded with the next six goals and took over with a 6-2 lead before the Sagehens found a goal from Jessie Nesbit to cut the deficit down to 6-3. Each team scored a goal at the end of the first half as Madison Lewis ended the second with a goal as the Sagehens trailed 7-4 at halftime.
Abele notched a five-meter penalty in the third for the Sagehens' only goal of the quarter as Santa Clara extended the lead with two of their own to take a 9-5 lead heading into the fourth. Each team scored one goal in the fourth as Correa converted a five-meter penalty but the Sagehens couldn't comeback in the second half as they fell to Santa Clara.
Pomona-Pitzer 12, Villanova 10
The Sagehens ended the tournament with a 12-10 win over Villanova.
Pomona-Pitzer spread the scoring around with hat-tricks from Correa, Abele and Sullivan Wu who each tallied three goals in the win.
Villanova and Pomona-Pitzer each got two goals in the first quarter. The two tams alternated goals with Nadia Paquin getting both goals for the Sagehens to end the first in a 2-2 tie. The Wildcats opened up the second with three-straight goals to take the lead but the Sagehens responded with back-to-back goals from Correa and Abele to cut the lead down to 5-4. The Wildcats ended the first half with a goal and took a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.
The Sagehens' offense exploded in the second half with 10 total goals in the third and fourth combined. Abele and Sullivan Wu scored early goals for the Sagehens and then Pomona-Pitzer ended the third with three goals from Sullivan Wu, Abele and Correa to take a 9-8 lead.
The Sagehens kept their offensive run going and increased their goal streak to six-straight with three goals to open up the fourth from Madison Lewis, Sullivan Wu and Correa to open up the game with a 12-8 lead over Villanova. The Wildcats tried to come back late in the game but two goals from Aurora Sheridan closed the door on a comeback attempt to give the Sagehens their first win of the Triton Invitational.
