Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Go 2-0 In Bulldog Invitational

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated non-conference opponents Concordia 8-7 and Cal State East Bay 11-9 on Saturday afternoon in the Bulldog Invitational.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 3-5 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 8, Concordia 7

The Sagehens were led by Nohea Kahaulelio who notched her first hat-trick of the season with three goals in the win. Anna Yu and Bella Villa also had multi-goal games with two each.  Morgan Stockham got the start in goal for the Sagehens and picked up the win with seven saves and three steals.

The two teams played identical periods in the first half with both teams scoring one goal in the first and two each in the second. Pomona-Pitzer got the scoring going as Yu converted on a powerplay off of an assist from Lucie Abele with 1:39 left to go in the first period, but Concordia answered with a goal just over a minute later to end the period tied 1-1.

The Sagehens scored back-to-back goals in the second after Nohea Kahaulelio and Yu notched their second goals of the game early in the period, but Concordia ended the first half with two goals inside the last minute of play to head into halftime tied at 3-3.

The two teams alternated goals in the third period as the Sagehens opened up the second half with a goal from Nohea Kahaulelio to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles came back and tied the match at 4-4 but Nohea Kahaulelio completed her hat-trick with a late goal in the third to give the Sagehens a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.

Concordia got right back into the game as they scored two-straight goals to open the fourth to take a one goal lead at 6-5. The Sagehens responded with a goal from Villa to tie the game at 6-6 but the Eagles reclaimed the lead with 3:13 left to play. Pomona-Pitzer ended the game with the final two goals as Janelle Lewis tied the score with 2:42 left in the fourth and Villa notched her second goal of the period with 1:57 left to play to give the Sagehens the lead. Concordia tried to send the match into overtime late in the fourth, but the Sagehens' defense was too strong as they held on for a win in game one of the Bulldog Invitational.

Pomona-Pitzer 11, Cal State East Bay 9

The Sagehens were led by Kyla Pickell, Nohea Kahaulelio and Samantha Martinez who all had two goals in the win. Stockham earned her second win of the day as she tallied eight saves and two steals in the win.

Pomona-Pitzer got its offense going early as they scored a game-high five goals in the first period. The Pioneers scored two of the first three goals of the game before the Sagehens scored back-to-back goals from Nohea Kahaulelio and Pickell to take their first lead of the game at 3-2. Cal State East Bay tied the game back up but the Sagehens ended the period with goals from Martinez and Kahea Kahaulelio to take a 5-3 lead.

The Pioneers came out and scored the first two goals of the second to tie the game at 5-5 but Pomona-Pitzer ended the half with three of the final four goals from Katherine Cullen, Pickell and Villa to take an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Cal Staet East Bay and Pomona-Pitzer each netted two goals in the third coming from Martinez and Nohea Kahaulelio as the teams went into the fourth with the Sagehens leading 10-8. Pomona-Pitzer took a three-goal lead after Abele scored an early goal in the fourth. The Pioneers tried to come back, but the Sagehens' defense held and only allowed one goal in the fourth to hang out for their second win of the day in the Bulldog Invitational.
