CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team earned their second win in the SCIAC on Tuesday night, defeating Occidental College at home with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-19). The Sagehens offense had a hot hitting night, hitting above .230 in all three sets. Naomi Chen-Mallouk led the Sagehens with 15 kills and a highly efficient .367 kill percentage while Gaby Harrison led the team with 16 digs. Isabel Kelly also supported the offense with nine kills and a .364 kill percentage.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to an 8-7 record overall and 2-3 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer took control of the first set with a 5-2 lead to start it off, with Chen-Mallouk scoring two kills during the run. Later with a 7-5 lead, the Sagehens went on a 6-1 run, during which Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong scored two kills. The Sagehens held off the Tigers and with a 21-17 lead, they scored four straight, capped by three straight errors by the Tigers to win the set.
The Sagehens wasted no time to dominate the second set, scoring five straight during Adrienne Tong's service to lead 8-3. After the Tigers took a point back, the Sagehens went off on a scoring spree, scoring 10 straight during Lauren Asato's service. Chloe Kerstein scored two kills during the run while the Tigers committed six errors. Ahead 23-10, Alexis Rudy and Chen-Mallouk scored back-to-back kills to take the second set 25-11.
The final set proved to be a battle, as both sides went back and forth for majority of the set. The Sagehens finally found a breakthrough while trailing 15-13 when Addo-Ashong's kill and Jackie Roland's service sparked a 5-0 run. Roland scored two service aces during the run to put the Sagehens ahead 18-15. The Sagehens never relinquished their lead, closing the match with a 4-1 run capped by a kill by Kelly to win 25-19.
