Women's Track and Field: Weigel, Banobi Score Wins, Sagehens Take Fourth at SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, CA — Maya Weigel won the 1500 meter, Cat Banobi took first in the 400 meter, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team finished fourth at the 2017 SCIAC Championships.

Day One Recap

Weigel ran one of the best races of her career. The senior won the event but that was just part of the story. Weigel's time of 4:22.83 was a SCIAC Division III record, a SCIAC Meet record, and a Pomona-Pitzer record. Her time is also the 10th fastest time ever run by a Division III runner.

The time is the second fastest time in the nation this season. Weigel finished in front of Bryn McKillop of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who finished with a time of 4:27.33, the third fastest time in the nation this season.

Banobi also had a record setting performance in her 400 meter win. The senior ran a personal best and fourth fastest time in Sagehen history at 57.13. Banobi just edged out Carmen Mejia of CMS who finished at 57.32.

"We had a terrific meet with lots of over-the-top performances across all our event groups," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "It's always fun to see individuals win conference titles, so to see Lauren win the 10k on Friday, and Maya and Cat win the 1500 meter and 400 meter races on Saturday is just a joy."

"They've worked so hard all season. Our entire team has worked so hard, and we also had a strong group of All-Conference athletes finish in the top three. This has been a banner season."

Lauren Hamilton followed up her win in the 10,000 meter yesterday with a second place finish in the 5000 meter on the final day of the meet. The freshman finished with a time of 18:02.01, a personal record and the ninth fastest time in program history.

Jessica Finn scored a second place finish in the highly competitive javelin event. The junior's best mark was at 140-01. Occidental's Sabrina Degnan won the event at 147-00. Finn's best mark this season at 141-03 ranks as the sixth best throw in the nation.
