Sagehens Finish Fourth At ITA Indoors

NICHOLASVILLVE, KY. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team finished in fourth place at the ITA Indoor Championships after their 5-4 loss against MIT on Sunday morning.

The Sagehens fell behind in doubles after they dropped two of the three matches to MIT. Samantha Moore-Thomson and Janie Marcus earned the only win of the doubles matches for the Sagehens with an 8-7 (7-1) tiebreaker win at the #3 spot.  MIT went on to take wins at #1 and #2 after Nina Ye and Lauren Rha fell 8-6 and Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou lost 8-4.

After falling behind in doubles, the Sagehens came storming back in singles play after earning the first three wins with Zhou getting a quick win at #1 singles with a win over Sarah Pertsmelidis 6-1, 6-1, Ye winning at #2 against Alaina Kolli 6-2, 6-1 and Markey grabbing a win at #6 singles against Yuka Perera 6-1, 6-2 to give the Sagehens a 4-2 lead. 

After needing one more win to clinch the match, the Sagehens found themselves down a set at all of the remaining matches. MIT took the #3 singles match after Rha fell to Caroline Vincent 7-5, 6-0 and both Amelia Poor and Janie Marcus battled to a third set in their matches at #4 and #5 singles.

MIT evened the score at 4-4 after Marcus dropped her match at the #5 spot to Sara Fernandez 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 6-3 as the third-place match all came down to Amelia Poor vs Jay Lu at the #4 match. 

Lu took the first set 6-3 against Poor while Poor rallied and won 7-5 in the second set. Poor went on to take a 5-3 lead in the third set but the two ended up locked at 6-6 and went into a tiebreaker where Lu pulled out the win 7-2 win.   

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to Cal Poly on Saturday, March 11th at 1:00 p.m.
