Sagehens Advance To ITA Semifinals With 5-4 Win Over Sewanee

NICHOLASVILLE, KY. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team came away with a 5-4 comeback win over Sewanee in round one of the ITA Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon at Top Seed Tennis Club.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-2 overall and advanced to the Semifinals.

Pomona-Pitzer had a scare early after they got into a hole against Sewanee losing all three of the doubles matches to start the day.     

In the first doubles match, Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty of Sewanee defeated Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou with a score of 8-2. At the No. 2 doubles match, Ansley Carpenter and Natalia Nassar of Sewanee won against Alex Coleman and Nina Ye with a score of 8-4 and then in the third doubles match, Samantha Moore-Thomson and Amelia Poor fell against Emma Smith and Nicole Nowak of Sewanee with a score of 8-5.

After falling behind 3-0 early, The Sagehens had little room for error in the singles matches.  Pomona-Pitzer started strong by winning the first three matches. Angie Zhou took a win against Emma Smith with a score of 6-0, 6-3, and Nina Ye followed with a win against Ansley Carpenter 6-2, 6-1. Lauren Rha continued the wins for the Sagehens after she won against Brooke Despriet of Sewanee with a score of 6-3, 6-1 to even the match at 3-3 with three singles matches to play.

Sewanee managed to win the next singles match at No. 4 after Katherine Petty of Sewanee won against Amelia Poor 6-1, 6-3. 

The Sagehens went on to clinch the comeback after Janie Marcus won against Sarah Livingston with a score of 6-4, 6-0 and then Marissa Markey won against Natalia Nassar of Sewanee at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-0 to advance the Sagehens into the semifinals of the ITA Indoor Championships.
