Women's Soccer: VarnBuhler's Hat-trick Propels Sagehens To Second Round Of NCAA Tournament

WAVERLY, IA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after their 6-0 win over St. Scholastica in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Wartburg College.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens have now set a new program record for wins in a single season with 18 as they move to 18-1-1 on the year. The Sagehens have now also set a new program record for shutouts in the single season with 17.

The Sagehens were led by senior Bria VarnBuhler who netted her first hat-trick of the season with three goals in the win.  VarnBuhler also has now set a new single season record for goals in a season with 21. First-year Sophie Staeger also netted her first multi-goal game of her career with two in the win while sophomore Emily Tomz also got on the scoresheet with one.

After an electric introduction to the game, the Sagehens kept their string of scoring quickly alive as they netted two goals within the first 16 minutes of the game.  Pomona-Pitzer got it going behind their leading scorer as VarnBuhler netted her 19th goal of the year to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens followed up with a jaw dropping goal as Tomz blasted a ball well outside the box and put it just out of reach of the keeper to double up the Sagehens' lead at 2-0 in the 16th minute.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more to its total in the first half as Staeger cleaned up a ball around the box and kicked it past the keeper to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Sagehens and VarnBuhler got the second half off to a great start offensively as she netted two goals just one minute apart. VarnBuhler netted the first goal of the second half off of an assist from first-year Taylor Venenciano in the 56th minute and then scored a 57th minute goal to give the Sagehens a 5-0 lead.

The Saints couldn't get anything going offensively as they had to deal with one of the best defenses and goalkeeper's in the nation.  St. Scholastica only managed to get off six shots in the game while senior Isa Berardo saved the only shot on goal of the night.

Pomona-Pitzer ended the game with another goal as Staeger doubled up on the day off of an assist from Emily Tomz to propel the Sagehens into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
