THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss of the year to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 3-1 on Wednesday night at Rolland Stadium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 11-1-1 on the year and 7-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens surrendered three goals in the loss to the Regals, which was the most scored against them this season and the only time a team has scored more than one goal against the Sagehen defense. Although the Sagehens outshot Cal Lutheran 18-9 and put 12 balls on target to the Regals' seven, Pomona-Pitzer could only come away with one goal in the road loss.
Cal Lutheran jumped ahead of Pomona-Pitzer early on In the first half after the Regals struck in the 21st minute on a threaded ball through the middle and shot past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. It was only the second time this season that the Sagehens trailed in a match and the first time that they trailed at halftime.
Cal Lutheran struck again early in the second half and became the first team to hold a two-goal lead on the Sagehens this season after a ball slipped into the box was shot and scored in the 49th minute to give the Regals a 2-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to one goal in the 73rd minute after VarnBuhler got on the board off of an assist from Correa as the Sagehens tried to get back into the game.
Pomona-Pitzer pushed the attack late as they searched for an equalizer but it left them open for a counter attack as the Regals found a good scoring opportunity late in the game and cashed in to push the lead to 3-1 in the 90th minute and handed the Sagehens their first loss of 2019.
