CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team notched their ninth-straight win and 299th in program history after their 1-0 win in the Sixth Street Rivalry over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent CMS on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 10-0-1 on the year and 6-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by senior Bria VarnBuhler who netted the only goal of the game in the win. Senior Isa Berardo earned the shutout and another win as they improved to 8-0-1 on the year with three saves.
Pomona-Pitzer kept their winning streak alive with a big win over their conference rivals to improve on what is the best start in program history for the team. The Sagehens wasted no time getting on the board as they struck for a goal in the 12th minute of the match after sophomore Ciannah Correa crossed in a ball to VarnBuhler who settled and placed a ball past the keeper to give the Sagehens an early 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens outshot the Athenas 11-3 in the first half with five shots on target but could only come away with the one goal as they went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated possession in the second half as CMS focuses on keeping the deficit at 1-0 and attempted to score off of counter attacks. The Athenas got a great look at a potential equalizer in the 79th minute but a diving save by Berardo spoiled any attempt at a trip to overtime for CMS as the Sagehens secured a win in leg one of the Sixth Street Rivalry.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Caltech on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m.
