CHICAGO, IL. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team left Illinois 2-0 on the weekend after their 3-0 win over Illinois Tech on Sunday morning at Stuart Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-0-1 on the year.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Anna Ponzio who tallied two goals on the day for her first brace of the season. Senior Bria VarnBuhler also got on the scoresheet for the Sagehens with a goal as well in the win. Sophomore Lindsey Uteda got the start in goal for the Sagehens and earned her first win of the season.
The Sagehens dominated possession against the Cardinals as they outshot them 18-6 with Illinois Tech getting just one shot on target for the game.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a lead about midway through the first half after a scramble in the box after a save by the Cardinals keeper found the foot of Ponzio who kicked it past the keeper for the opening goal of the game in the 26th minute.
The Sagehens went into the half with a one goal lead but doubled their lead shortly into the second half after Ponzio earned her second goal of the game in the 48th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer had their offense going early in the second half as they added a third in the 55th minute after Ponzio rocketed a shot off of the crossbar that bounced down to the feet of VarnBuhler who settled and put a clinical ball into the corner of the goal to extend the lead to 3-0.
After going up by three goals against the Cardinals the Sagehens were able to ride out their lead for the rest of the second half as they still have not allowed a goal this season in four games played.
