Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Senior midfielder Nicole Quilliam (pictured celebrating goal, photo by Tracy Maple) scored twice and junior defender Taylor Fortson added another as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Pacific (Ore.) 3-1 at the Best Western Inn Thousand Oaks Classic, hosted by Cal Lutheran on Sunday morning.
With the win, the Sagehens level their record at 1-1 on the year after falling in a tight 2-1 contest to Chicago on Friday. Pacific falls to 1-1 with the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer controlled much of the game, finishing with a 17-5 edge in shots (11-1 in the first half) and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Quilliam got the Sagehens started with 10 minutes left in the first half when she scored off a chip pass from freshman Abby Onderwyzer Gold, who scored the goal for Pomona-Pitzer in the Chicago defeat.
Fortson extended the lead to 2-0 at the 58:34 mark of the second half when she converted off a corner kick taken by sophomore Agueda Dudley-Berrios. Pacific was able to creep back within 2-1 seven minutes later on a goal from Kara Lankey, but Quilliam gave the Sagehens back the two-goal lead with 16;35 left in the contest when she scored a sliding goal off a feed from sophomore Danika Bethune.
Junior goalie Annie Wedel started and did not have to make a save in the first half, while sophomore Corey Goelz had two second half saves. Megan Green had eight saves to help keep the Boxers close.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels for a road game at The Master's College.
