CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team opened up their 2020 season with a big 21-7 over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands on Saturday morning at the South Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens start the year at 1-0 overall.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Sarah Casey and first-year Eloise Cherian who each netted five goals in the win. First-year Caroline Worthington also tallied a hat-trick with three goals as well in the win. Sophomore Emily Vomvas got the win in goal with six saves and seven goals against.
The Sagehens got started early on in the first half as Cherian opened up the game with a goal inside the first three minutes to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded with a goal off of a power play before the Sagehens added two more from sophomore Jessalyn Simon-Parker and Cherian to push the lead to 3-1.
Redlands kept it close early as they continued to respond to keep the game within reach. The Bulldogs sored another goal to cut the deficit down to one but the Sagehens came back with back-to-back goals from junior Kate Immergluck and Casey. Redlands scored two of their own to keep the Sagehens' lead at one goal but Pomona-Pitzer came back with four-straight goals from Casey, first-year Grace Warner, Cherian and sophomore Maggie Sweeney to take a 9-4 lead with 5:27 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs and Sagehens ended the half alternating goals as Worthington and Cherian ended the half with goals for the Sagehens as Pomona-Pitzer took an 11-6 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Sagehens as Pomona-Pitzer dominated Redlands in the final 30 minutes. The Sagehens scored 10-straight goals in the second half to blow the game wide open. Casey scored three of the first four goals of the second half with Cherian getting another as well to push the lead to 15-6 inside the first 10 minutes. The Herrmann family followed with a pair of goals as Thyra Herrmann and Lily Herrmann scored back-to-back goals followed by Immergluck, Warner and two from Worthignton to end the goal parade for the Sagehens. Redlands ended the game with a goal with 1:28 left in the second half but the Sagehens dominated play during the second half of the contest and came away with a win in their season opener.
