Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman Aubrey Douglass (Piedmont, Calif. - pictured) had the tying goal in the 55th minute and fed junior Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) for the game-winner 36 seconds later to give the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team a 9-8 over win Occidental on Saturday.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the SCIAC, while completing the regular season series sweep of Occidental (7-9, 5-4 SCIAC). Pomona-Pitzer won the first meeting at home 15-12 back on Feb. 16.
The Sagehens made the most of their opportunities on Saturday, scoring nine goals on only 12 shot attempts. Douglass led the way with three (to go along with the game-winning assist), while London had two goals and an assist, and four other players had one goal apiece, with freshman Sarah Markowitz (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) tallying a goal and an assist.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 6-3 lead into halftime and pushed the lead to 7-3 early in the second half on a goal from senior Emma Molloy (Basking Ridge, N.J.). However, Occidental then scored the next five goals in a row, with Tori Larson netting two, Rebecca Beldin scoring two and Sarah Kessler giving the Tigers their first lead at 8-7 with 9:44 to play.
However, senior goalie Casey Leek (Bucharest, Romania) stopped a free position shot to keep it a goal game, Douglass came up big with her third goal of the game to even the score with 5:48 left on the clock. After junior Kaitlin Jones (Minneapolis, Minn.) won the draw control, Douglass found London for the go-ahead goal with 5:12 remaining.
Occidental had a couple chances to tie, but sophomore defender Zoe Brown (Seattle, Wash.) came up with a ground ball off a turnover to stop one threat, and Leek (10 saves) was able to scoop up another loose ball to help seal it.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday for a road game at CMS.
