Redlands Stays In First Place With 12-5 Win Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Redlands Women's Lacrosse Team remained in first in the SCIAC with a 12-5 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening at Merritt Field in the final regular season home game for the Sagehens.

With the win, Redlands improves to 11-4 on the year, including 7-1 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in league play.

Sophomore forward Alexa Sarussi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the way for the Sagehens with three goals, while senior forward Emma Molloy (Basking Ridge, N.J.) celebrated her Senior Day with a pair of assists. Fellow senior Casey Leek (Bucharest, Romania) had nine saves in goal.

The game was low-scoring early on, with Redlands holding a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, before junior Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored on a free position shot with 11:03 on the clock. However, Crystal Painter answered with back-to-back goals to make the score 4-1, and Jacky Craycraft added another for Redlands to make the score 5-1 at the break.

The Bulldogs extended the run to 8-0 by scoring the first five goals of the second half. Freshman Emlyn Foxen (Portland, Ore.) broke the run with a free position shot, before Sarussi scored three in a row to cut the lead to 11-5, but the Sagehens could come no closer.

Aimee Dewan led Redlands with three goals, while Painter had two goals and two assists.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday at Occidental.
