CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 80-74 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens have also clinched a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Madison Quan who had a team-high 19 points, six assists and six steals in the win. Sophomore Amara Chidom had 13 points and seven rebounds while first-year Kaitlyn Leung came off of the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds as well.
The Regals outshot the Sagehens from the floor at 45.2% to Pomona-Pitzer's 42% but the Sagehens held a big advantage on the three ball as they hit on 40% of their threes with Cal Lutheran at just 20%. Both teams were even on rebounds at 42 apiece with Cal Lutheran holding the advantage down low with 42 points in the paint to the Sagehens' 22 but the Sagehen defense forced the Reglas to turn the ball over 13 times with the Sagehens leading both points off of turnovers and second chance points.
A tight contest between the two teams with a SCIAC Postseason berth on the line between Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran. The Sagehens had their offense working early on to begin the first quarter as they jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead inside the first three minutes of play. The Sagehens went on to hold a 16-12 lead after a three by Quan but Cal Lutheran ended the quarter strong and took over a one-point lead at 17-16 heading into the second.
The Regals were the team out to a hot start to begin the second quarter as they came out and took their largest lead of the game at 24-19 with 8:26 left to go in the half. The Sagehens battled back and took over the lead after a big three by Leung put the Sagehens back on top 33-31. Leung added 10 points in the second quarter including the final four points of the half for the Sagehens as Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime with a 39-38 lead.
A solid defensive quarter from the Sagehens in the third aided them in the win as they held Cal Lutheran to their lowest point quarter of the game with just 15 points in the third. The Regals kept the one-point deficit for the better half of the third quarter but the Sagehens' offense came alive late in the third to take a 57-53 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.
The Sagehens wasted no time in the fourth and quickly extended their lead after another Quan three pointer pushed the lead to 64-53 within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Regals began to press to try to get some easy baskets on offense but the Sagehens broke the game open after a transition three in the corner by sophomore Cameron Edward gave the Sagehens their largest lead of the game at 71-59 with 4:08 left to go.
The Reglas made a late push and cut the lead down to 76-71 but the Sagehens were able to do enough to keep the Regals from coming back and held on for the win at home.
