LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 72-69 on Wednesday night The Tents.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Madison Quan who led the way with a team-high 23 points and five rebounds in the win. First-year Emily Church came off of the bench with 14 points and five rebounds, junior Renae Tamura tallied 11 points and first-year Kaitlyn Leung chipped in with 10.
The Leopards tried a blackout game against the Sagehens, but it was Pomona-Pitzer who shot the lights out at The Tents as they connected on 41.7% of their three-pointers and 46.7% from the field. The Sagehens outscored the Leopards in the paint 44-42 while La Verne held an advantage on the turnover front with just 13 against the Sagehens' 18.
A high octane first quarter from both teams on offense which saw a combined 45 points between the two teams. The Sagehens got out to a 10-2 lead to start the game but the Leopards quickly erased the early deficit and came back to pull within one point at 10-9. The Leopards went on to take a late lead in the first but a three-pointer by Leung gave the Sagehens a 23-22 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense hit a wall in the second quarter as the Leopards were able to jump out to a 33-25 lead with about five minutes gone in the second. La Verne outscored the Sagehens 17-10 in the second quarter with the Sagehens scoring their lowest point total for the game as the Leopards went into halftime with a 39-33 lead.
The Sagehens responded with a big third quarter in which they outscored La Verne 20-13. La Verne kept their distance early on from Pomona-Pitzer with a 48-41 lead with 5:10 left in the third. The Sagehens came on strong late in the third quarter and took a 53-52 lead after seven points each from Quan and Tamura led the Sagehens' comeback effort to take a one-point lead heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens came out and took their largest lead of the game early in the fourth after a Church layup extended the lead to 61-52. The Leopards responded with a run throughout the fourth quarter and tied the game at 67-67 with 1:38 left to go. The Sagehens responded as Quan nailed a huge three-pointer to put Pomona-Pitzer up three, but the Leopards responded with a bucket on the other end to cut the lead down to one point at 70-69 with 44 seconds left. La Verne got the ball back and Pomona-Pitzer had to come up with multiple stops during the next possession to preserve their lead. The Leopards were forced to foul as Quan hit both free throws from the line and the Sagehens completed the regular season sweep over La Verne.
