Women's Basketball: Church And Leung Notch Career-Highs In Loss To Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 74-71 on Saturday night.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by first-year Emily Church who notched a new career-high with 19 points and added eight rebounds as well.  Fellow first-year Kaitlyn Leung also notched a career-high with 16 points while junior Renae Tamura had 16 points as well in the loss.

The Sagehens shot 35.9% from the field with the Regals holding a slight advantage at 42.9%.  The Regals also shot better from beyond the arc at 42.1% with the Sagehens at 27.3%.  Other than the shooting percentages, the Sagehens and Regals played a pretty even games with rebounds even at 41 each, points in the paint even at 26 each and Cal Lutheran with two more turnovers at 19-17. 

Pomona-Pitzer stayed with Cal Lutheran early on in the first quarter with Cal Lutheran holding a small lead at 11-10 with 4:01 left in the first. The Regals ended the quarter with a 12-6 run and took a 23-16 lead after the first.

Pomona-Pitzer came out and won the second quarter, the only quarter in which the Sagehens outscored the Regals. The Sagehens came back and cut into the Cal Lutheran lead after a pair of Cameron Edward free throws trimmed the lead down to 25-21 within the first minute of the second quarter. The Sagehens chipped away at the lead as they outscored the Regals 18-14 and went into halftime trailing 37-34. 

Pomona-Pitzer quickly got the lead down to one point after an Edward three closed the gap to 40-39 with 8:27 left in the third. The Sagehens kept the deficit close throughout the third and went into the fourth quarter down three points at 54-51.

The big moment in the fourth came when the Sagehens were sent to the line with four free throws after a foul and a technical foul on the Cal Lutheran coach gifted the Sagehens a 69-67 lead after a pair of made free throws by Tamura. The Sagehens extended their lead to 71-67 after a jump shot by Vanessa Hsia but back-to-back baskets for the Regals gave Cal Lutheran a 72-71 lead with 1:36 left to play.

 The Sagehens had attempts to tie the game late but the Cal Lutheran defense stopped the Sagehens last second possession as the Sagehens fell on the road to the Regals 74-71.
