Sagehens Run Rule Leopards in First Game, Complete Doubleheader Sweep on Saturday

LA VERNE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team soared to a 14-3 five-inning game one victory over the La Verne Leopards to start the doubleheader. The Sagehens recorded 15 hits in game one with Laureen Ziment recording four hits, four RBIs, and scoring three times to lead Pomona-Pitzer in the first match. The Sagehens completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-1 victory in game two to advance to 10-8 on the season and 2-1 in the conference. The Sagehens kept the bats rolling in game two as Kylie Liu had three hits with two RBIs while Amanda Robman, Devin Waddell, and Addie Wasikonis all recorded two hits. Erika Rivera pitched a full seven innings for the Sagehens, giving up five hits and just one run while recording seven strikeouts. 

The Leopards struck first in the bottom of the first inning, hitting three-straight RBI singles to take an early 3-0 lead. The Sagehens wasted no time answering back as Lauren Ziment hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second inning. The Sagehens poured it on in the fourth inning with Bella Carreon tying the game at 3-3 with an RBI single up the middle. From there, Claire Sefkow recorded an RBI Sac fly while Amanda Robman hit an RBI single through the left side, extending the Sagehen lead to 6-3. The Leopards continued to fall behind as they walked in a run with Devin Waddell earning the RBI walk to take a 7-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Pomona-Pitzer continued to lay it on as Claire Sefkow walked in a run before Natalie Murguia hit a two RBI double to center field, putting Pomona-Pitzer up 10-3. Kylie Liu and Lauren Ziment both hit two RBI singles to extend the Sagehens lead to a commanding 14-3 lead.  

Kailey Newkirk completed the dominate victory for the Sagehens in the circle as she forced two fly outs and a pop up to cap off a 5.0 inning game with just three hits allowed. 

Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning with a two RBI double from Devin Waddell and an RBI single from Bella Carreon, giving the Sagehens an early 3-0 lead. Kylie Liu added another run for the Sagehens in the second inning with an RBI single to right center to put Pomona-Pitzer up 4-0. After three scoreless innings for both teams, Liu hit another RBI single, this time to left field, in the sixth inning to make it 5-0. Amanda Robman recorded an RBI single of her own to keep the scoring going before Devin Waddell reached first on a fielding error that brought Liu home, giving the Sagehens a comfortable 7-0 lead. La Verne was able to tack on one run in the bottom of the sixth but failed to find anymore as the Sagehens earned the 7-1 victory in game two.
