Sagehens Split With Buena Vista on Thursday Afternoon

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split with the Buena Vista Beavers with a 3-2 extra innings loss in game one and a 6-4 victory in game two. The Sagehens were led by Devin Waddell who had a home run with two hits and two RBIs. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. when they host Manhattanville.  

Pomona-Pitzer 2, Buena Vista 3 (8 Innings)

The Sagehens fell behind early in game one as the Beavers recorded an RBI sac fly to right field to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Beavers tacked on another run in the fourth inning with an RBI single to double their lead to 2-0. 

The Sagehens scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Lauren Ziment and Natalie Murguia both hit singles before Claire Sefkow doubled to center field to bring in Ziment and cut the Beavers lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, a solo home run from Kylie Liu tied the game at 2-2, sending the game into extras. With a runner placed on second in the top of the eighth, the Beavers laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third before recording a sac fly to left field to take a 3-2 lead. Emily Hurtado was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth before advancing to third after a ground out from Ziment. The Sagehens went down in order from there, ending the game 3-2 in eight innings in favor of the Beavers. 

Pomona-Pitzer 6, Buena Vista 4

The Buena Vista Beavers got off to a strong start in the first inning, with a double to right center that brought in three runs, giving the Beavers an early 3-0 lead. 

Pomona-Pitzer quickly responded in the third inning, with Devin Waddell hitting a double to left field that brought in Addie Wasikonis, cutting the Beavers' lead to 2-1. In the fourth inning, the Sagehens tied up the game with Natalie Murguia reaching first on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Lauren Ziment to advance to third and Emily Hurtado to score, tying the game at 2-2.

The Sagehens took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with Kylie Liu hitting a single down the right-field line that brought in Bella Carreon. In the fifth inning, Waddell hit a homer to left field, bringing in another run and extending the Sagehens' lead to 4-2. Wasikonis then hit a single up the middle that brought in two more runs with Natalie Murguia and Claire Sefkow crossing home plate to give Pomona-Pitzer a commanding 6-2 lead. Despite their efforts, the Beavers were unable to make up the deficit, and the game ended with Pomona-Pitzer earning the 6-4 victory.
