CLAREMONT, CA. – The second day of the SCIAC Tournament provided plenty of dramatic moments, but in the end the Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team prevailed 6-5 over Whittier College after 10 innings. Katy Hurley batted 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs while Alondra Reynoso threw 4.2 innings of shutout relief, striking out two for the win.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 31-10-1 record overall after the win and are one victory away from winning the SCIAC Championship.
The Sagehens struck early in the first inning when Katy Hurley blasted a two-run double with two outs to take a 2-0 lead. The Whittier Poets struck back in the bottom of the second inning when Janelle Ha laced an RBI single to cut the Sagehens' lead in half.
Pomona-Pitzer added an insurance run in the top of the third inning. With one out and Kristen Hong on second, Rodarte laced a single to center field to bring in Hong.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Poets struck back with two runs to tie the game with Brianna MaGee slapping the game-tying single with a line drive to left field. Whittier College took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ashlei Sanchez hit a two-run double to take a 5-3 lead.
Heading into the final inning, the Sagehens strung a comeback rally. With one out and runners on first and second, Izzy Deatherage laced a single to left field to load the bases. Hurley took advantage of the opportunity with a single to center field and Karina Falkstrom followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The two sides battled while Reynoso held her ground with four straight shutout innings starting from the seventh inning. The Sagehens finally found their go-ahead run in the top of the 10th when Olivia Campion hit an RBI single to center field to score Falkstrom from second. Reynoso slammed the door in the bottom of the 10th after giving up a leadoff single, leaving a runner stranded to win the game.
Up Next: The Sagehens will face the winner of the game between Whittier College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
