Softball: Doubles, Triples Barrage Send Sagehens Past Chapman In SCIAC Tournament

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team got off to a hot start in the SCIAC Tournament, taking a comfortable 6-2 victory over Chapman University on Friday afternoon. Liz Rodarte pitched a complete game, surrendering only two runs for her 17th win of the season and batting 2-for-3 with an RBI. Megan Otsuka led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, including two triples, three runs and an RBI. Izzy Deatherage and Baleigh McCuskey also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs each.

Season Impact: After the victory the Sagehens improve to a 30-10-1 record overall.

In the top of the third inning Megan Otsuka crushed a one-out triple to right center to give the Sagehens their first run-scoring opportunity. The senior Liz Rodarte seized the chance, lacing a double to right-center to bring in the Sagehens' first run.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers nearly threatened to tie the game, loading the bases with one out. After a meeting at the mound, Rodarte calmly escaped the jam. She induced a pop fly and followed up with an easy ground out to third preserve the 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens strung another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning when Karina Falkstrom led off with a single up the middle. Makensey Druckman advanced Falkstrom to third on a bloop single to right field. Baleigh McCuskey cleared the bases with a line drive double to the front of the left-center fence but was thrown out while trying to extend to third base. Later with a runner on first and two outs, Megan Otsuka crushed a triple to right center to extend the lead 4-1. Izzy Deatherage kept the rally going with a double down the left field line to extend the lead 5-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Sagehens ran into some trouble as Chapman tacked on two runs on a one-out double by Samantha Whalen to cut the deficit 5-2. With a runner on second, Rodarte escaped the jam after inducing two pop flies.

Izzy Deatherage tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, bringing home Otsuka from third base to stretch the lead 6-2. Rodarte closed out the game with two scoreless innings to seal the victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens will return to Athenas Field tomorrow to take on Whittier College for winner's bracket game at 1:30 p.m.
