Claremont, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark Softball team scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break open a 2-1 game and capture a 7-1 win on Thursday afternoon in the steady rain at Pomona-Pitzer Softball Stadium.
The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 0-3 on the young season after it was swept by NAIA Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Lewis & Clark starts the year out at 1-0 with the win.
Junior center fielder Ashley Morello (pictured) was 3-for-3 with a walk for the Sagehens, and scored the only run after a double in the bottom of the fifth. One out later, senior shortstop Lauren Boden singled up the middle and Morello slid home with the run.
The Sagehens saw a potential rally snuffed out in the sixth inning as a runner on second was caught in a rundown, and third baseman Caitlin Basilio robbed Susanne Boden on a hot smash in the 5-6 hole, snaring the ball on a hop and making the throw to first.
The seventh saw Lewis & Clark break it open as Lindsay Yearman had an RBI single, and with two outs, Haley Robinson cleared the bases with a three-run double. Tiana Rosario added an RBI single to make the score 7-1.
Robinson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI for the Pioneers, while Madison Hollenbeck threw a complete-game six-hitter to get the win. Eden Griffen threw four solid innings, allowing one earned run, but took the tough luck loss.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Vanguard for a non-conference doubleheader.
