About the Program

Annually one of the top teams in conference, Pomona-Pitzer's men's cross country team boasts an outstanding history of success. The Sagehens race over 8000m (4.97 mile) courses, and the list of successful runners who have worn the Pomona-Pitzer singlet is a lengthy one.

At the conference level, Pomona-Pitzer men have won 13 SCIAC team titles, with the most recent title coming in 2018. Since the creation of the NCAA Division III, the following Pomona-Pitzer men have scored individual SCIAC Championship meet victories: Gerry Harnett (1978), Nick Buchan (1979), Sieg Lindstrom (1981 and 1982), David Francis (1983), Rory Frampton (1984), Avo Artinyian (1993), Crosby Freeman (2003-2005), Will Leer (2006), John Fowler (2015), and Andy Reischling (2017 and 2018).

The men's team competes in the NCAA Division III and the NCAA West Region. In the Division III ranks, the Sagehens have earned 15 NCAA Nationals berths as a team, including each of the previous six seasons (2012-2017). As a team, the Sagehens have placed in the top-10 on numerous occasions, finishing as high as 6th in 2015 and 2017. Individually, eight athletes have earned NCAA Division III Cross Country All-American honors: Gerry Harnett (1977 and 1978), Adam Boardman (1999), Crosby Freeman (2002, 2004, 2005), Will Leer (2006), John Fowler (2015), Colin Mulligan (2017), James Kinney (2017), Andy Reischling (2018).

Success for the men's cross country program isn't limited to the race course. By having a total team roster with a cumulative GPA of over 3.10, the team has earned All-Academic honors every year since the introduction of this award in 2008.

The squad trains on the neighborhood streets and bike paths of idyllic Claremont, and on the rolling dirt fireroads and trails in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in northern Claremont.

In recent years the cross country team has competed in large invitationals across the country including: The Standford Invitational, UC-Riverside Invitational, Louisville Cross Country Classic in Kentucky, Williams College Purple Valley Classic in Massachusetts, UW-Oshkosh Invitational in Wisconsin, and in our home Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
