CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Cross Country showed up in strong form for their home meet on Saturday morning, seeing three runners finish within the top-10 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. The Sagehens finished second as a team, first among Division III schools, collecting 50 points. Cal Poly Pomona finished first overall with 35 points and University of Redlands took third at 95 points.
"Today's home meet was about giving some other members of our team an opportunity to step up and be the scorers for the team," said Head Coach Jordan Carpenter. "I wanted to see this group run at the front with the confidence that they are good enough to compete with anyone. I thought we executed well as a group and had a very strong top-3 runners. We weren't able to take home the win, but I was still pleased with how our group competed."
Ethan Ashby led the team with a fifth-place finish with a time of 25:29.9 while Owen Woo followed right behind him by less than a millisecond at 25:29.9 as well. Joe Hesse-Withbroe took eighth place at 25:30.7, his first top-10 finish in his collegiate career.
"It has been really fun to see Joe's progression from last season to this season," said Coach Carpenter. "The confidence he showed today to put himself at the front and then for it to pay off with a great performance was awesome to witness as a coach. I know it is something our entire squad was really pumped up about today."
Outside the top-10, Leonard McComas placed 15th at 26:01.5 and Adin Becker followed right behind at 26:08.4. Oliver Chang finished 17th at 26:12.6 and Nathan Stringham later crossed in 19th at 26:21.3. Paul McKinley placed in 21st at 26:23.5.
Up Next: The Sagehens will split up their squad to compete at the UC Riverside Highlander Meet and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invite on Saturday, October 19.
