REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team came away with a pair of conference wins after their 13-9 win over Redlands on Saturday night at the Thompson Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Joseph Schafer who notched his second hat-trick of the day with three goals in the win. Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz, Adam Gross and Riley Mangan all netted multi-goal games with two each and Dylan Elliott along with the entire Sasaki family each tallied one goal.
The Sagehens jumped ahead early after outscoring the Bulldogs 4-1 in the first period. Pomona-Pitzer opened up back-to-back goals from Schafer and Gross before Redlands converted a five-meter penalty to cut the score to 2-1. The Sagehens added two goals with less than a minute remaining after Gorcey-Biblowitz and Schafer added goals to earn a three goal cushion heading into the second period.
Redlands answered back in the second after they netted three of the first four goals in the period as Schafer completed his hat-trick in the first half. Gorcey-Biblowitz scored as well in the second off of a five-meter penalty but the Bulldogs ended the half with a goal to cut the Sagehens' lead to one at 6-5 at halftime.
Redlands tied the match early in the second half with the opening goal of the third, but the Sagehens responded with three-straight goals from Ben Sasaki and two from Mangan to take a 9-6 lead with 4:13 left in the third. After a Bulldog goal, Gross ended the third as he found the back of the net with five seconds left on the clock to give the Sagehens a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens and Bulldogs alternated goals in the fourth as the Sagehens did a good job of not letting Redlands go on a late run. Sam Sasaki, Noah Sasaki and Elliott all netted goals in the fourth period as the Sagehens held on for the road win.
