LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 19-16 on Saturday morning at Las Flores Pool.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Joseph Schafer who netted a team-high four goals in the win. Adam Gross also notched a hat-trick for the Sagehens with three goals while 11 different Sagehens got on the board during the game.
An extremely high-scoring contest between the Leopards and the Sagehens that saw a combined 35 goals off of 65 total shots with the two teams going 8-8 on penalty shots.
Each team netted four goals in the first after the Sagehens got the scoring going with Gross on a five-meter penalty. Schafer and Benjamin Sasaki followed with goals while Gross scored again to end the first even at 4-4.
La Verne netted six goals in the second period while the Sagehens also had a high scoring period with five. The Leopards and Sagehens began the period alternating goals as Schafer, Sasaki and Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz got on the board, but the Leopards ended the first half with back-to-back goals to take a 10-9 lead heading into the break.
Pomona-Pitzer pulled away in the third period as they scored an impressive and season-high eight goals in the third. After the Leopards opened up the second half with a goal, the Sagehens scored six-straight goals to take a 15-11 lead. La Verne broke the goal parade with 41 second left in the third but the Sagehens were able to add two more before the end of the period as Keegan Coleman and Schafer netted goal to take a 17-12 lead heading into the fourth.
La Verne outscored the Sagehens 4-2 in the final period of play but the monster third period for the Sagehens was too much for the Leopards to overcome as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the win.
