PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo Team got off to a winning start in their conference season, defeating Caltech in their SCIAC opener 15-9. Dylan Elliot led the team with four goals while Jacob Niskey also added a hat trick. Ben and Sam Sasaki each scored two goals and the Sagehens' defense collected 15 steals as a whole.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 4-1 record overall after tonight's victory.
Adam Gross opened up the scoring for the Sagehens and Niskey followed with a goal on a power play to make it 2-0 with 4:46 left. Max Bricken cut the lead in half for Caltech, but the Sagehens padded their lead off a 5-Meter penalty by Niskey after a foul by Bradley Justice. The two sides traded goals with Steven Csaposs of Caltech scoring with 10 seconds left to cut the Sagehens lead 4-3.
Pomona-Pitzer looked for a breakthrough against the Beavers in the second period, and Elliott answered with the first goal of the period. With 3:42 remaining, Elliott added one more and Ben Sasaki scored 33 seconds later to make it 7-3. A penalty goal with 45 seconds left by Sam Sasaki gave the Sagehens an 8-6 lead at halftime.
The Sagehens went on a brief run in the five-minute mark of the third period, as Tony Murphy scored off a pass from Jacob Cohn, and Zach Senator followed on an unassisted effort. Jack Mallory later scored on a power play to make it 11-6, but Caltech netted twice to keep it close. Pomona-Pitzer's defense stepped up in the final period, shutting out the Beavers while adding four goals, including three in the final three minutes.
