SAN DIEGO, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team ended the Triton Tournament with a pair of wins with a 14-6 win over Fresno Pacific and an 8-5 win over CMS on Sunday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 3-1 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, Fresno Pacific 6
The Sagehens got out to a good start in day two of the Triton Tournament as they opened up the first period with four goals. Senator got the scoring going early with a goal just over a minute into the game. Fresno Pacific followed with back-to-back goals to take their first lead at 2-1, but the Sagehens ended the first with three-straight from Cade Curry, Murphy and Senator to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second.
The Sagehens matched their first period total with four more goals in the second. Jacob Niskey opened up the second with a goal, but the Birds responded with a goal to keep the Sagehens' lead at two goals at 5-3. Pomona-Pitzer and Fresno Pacific alternated goals again to bring the score to 6-4 but the Sagehens ended the half with two unanswered goals from Murphy and Senator to take an 8-4 lead at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer began to pull away in the third after opening up the half with three-straight goal after two from Murphy and one from Maxwell Bethel to extend the lead to 11-6 with 1:22 left in the period. Concordia scored two of the next three goals of the game, but the Sagehens piled on two more goals in the fourth from Alexander Peterson and Curry to hold on for the win.
Pomona-Pitzer 8, CMS 5
The Sagehens were led by Dylan Elliott who tallied three goals in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer and CMS faced off in an early season Sixth Street Rivalry in the final game of the Triton Tournament. The Sagehens got ahead early with a goal from Senator and after a CMS goal, the Sagehens capped off the first period with another goal by Elliott to take a 2-1 lead after the first.
The Sagehen defense shut down CMS in the second as they did not allow a goal but earned one on offense from Bejamin Sasaki to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
CMS opened up the second half with a quick goal inside of a minute of play but the Sagehens answered with a goal from Riley Mangan and a powerplay goal from Sam Sasaki to close out the third quarter up 5-2.
CMS ended up with three goals in the fourth period but the Sagehens matched them goal for goal as Bejamin Sasaki and Elliott combined for three goals in the period to hand the Sagehens a 3-1 record in the Triton Tournament.
