San Diego, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses to top 10 teams at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego on Saturday.
The Sagehens fell in their opener 17-6 to No. 6 Long Beach State in the afternoon, and then dropped a 15-6 match to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara in the final match of the evening.
Senior Stephen Vint had a pair of goals in both contests for Pomona-Pitzer. Junior defender Phillip Clayman (pictured) added two goals against Long Beach State, as did freshman Bennett Royce, who scored the first two goals of his career.
In the nightcap against the Gauchos, sophomore Tommy Turner joined Vint in scoring a pair of goals, while freshman Mark Hallman added his first collegiate tally. Sophomore James Baker, the leading scorer for Pomona-Pitzer a year ago, added his first of the new campaign.
Sophomore Ethan Caleb Prater-Fahey had 10 saves in the Long Beach State match in the first half, before giving way to freshman Daniel Diemer, who had eight in the second half. Prater-Fahey followed with nine saves in the UC Santa Barbara match.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend for the Inland Empire Tournament, with two games at La Verne on Saturday and two at Redlands on Sunday, including a meeting with No. 1 ranked Stanford.
