Whittier Pulls Away From Sagehens In SCIAC Semifinals

Orange, Calif. - Goran Mataic scored three goals in the final 1:30 of the first quarter to give Whittier a 6-2 lead and the Poets never looked back on their way to a 16-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon at the SCIAC Championships, hosted by Chapman.

The loss drops the Sagehens to 10-22 overall on the year and 6-4 in the SCIAC, as they will finish off play tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Redlands in the third-place match. Whittier improves to 9-1 in the SCIAC and will face CMS at 2:30 p.m. in the championship.

Sophomore Phillip Clayman (pictured) led Pomona-Pitzer with three goals, while seniors Jarrod Gaut and Ryan Higgins had two apiece. Mataic finished with four goals to lead all scorers.

Whittier jumped out to a 3-0 lead before goals from Clayman and Higgins pulled the Sagehens within 3-2. Mataic then rattled off three straight goals to close out the first quarter and put the Poets in front 6-2.

Junior Travis Larsen posted up for a goal to close the lead to 6-3, but the Poets were able to extend the lead to 10-5 at the break and scored the first goal of the second half to push their lead to 11-5. Gaut answered back with a goal, but Whittier scored the next four straight goals to end any comeback hopes.

Pomona-Pitzer will be facing Redlands for the third time this season. The Bulldogs won the first two meetings - a non-league match at Cal Baptist and a home match at Redlands earlier this month.
