Claremont, Calif. - Junior Stephen Vint (pictured - photo by Becky Gaut) scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team earned a hard-fought 10-7 win over Cal Lutheran on Wednesday afternoon in the SCIAC opener for both teams.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-16 on the year (with 13 of the 16 losses coming to nationally ranked teams, including nine in the top 10). Cal Lutheran slips to 8-11 with the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer never trailed, but never led by more than one goal until a game-ending 3-0 run turned a 7-7 tie into a 10-7 win. Senior Ryan Higgins broke the 7-7 tie with a lob shot that tucked under the crossbar with 4:19 to play, and Vint added two more goals (3:26, 2:10) to put the game away.
Senior Jarrod Gaut added three goals for Pomona-Pitzer, while freshman James Baker and junior Travis Larsen added one apiece. Senior Tyler Hill had seven first-half saves for Pomona-Pitzer, while Caleb Prater-Fahey had five in the second half to earn the win.
Pomona-Pitzer had leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, 5-4, 6-5, 7-6, and 8-7 before Vint's final two goals created the only multiple-goal leads of the contest. Zach Graper scored twice for Cal Lutheran, while five other Kingsmen had a goal apiece.
The Sagehens return to action on Saturday for two matches, facing Occidental at 11 a.m. in another SCIAC match and a non-conference meeting with Air Force at 3 p.m.
