Cox Game-Winner Gives Sagehens 10-9 Victory At Chapman

Orange, Calif. - Senior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) had four goals, including the game-winner with 53 seconds left in regulation, as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team remained perfect in the SCIAC with a 10-9 road win over Chapman on Wednesday.

The win improves the Sagehens to 11-13 overall and 7-0 in the SCIAC, setting up a home battle with neighborhood rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-1 SCIAC coming into Wednesday) on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the regular season title. Chapman, which could have forced a three-way tie for first with a win, slips to 5-2 in conference play.

Pomona-Pitzer trailed for most of the game, until sophomore Clayton Hardman (Old Greenwich, Conn.) tied the score at 7-7 with a shot at the buzzer at the end of the third quarter. The Sagehens then took their first lead of the afternoon with 6:22 left in the fourth, on a goal from sophomore Stephen Vint (El Cajon, Calif.).

Chapman answered back with a goal from James Vigeant on its next possession with 6:09 left in the contest, before junior Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) once again gave the Sagehens the lead with 5:29 remaining.

Brett Carter knotted the score at 9-9 for the Panthers with 4:00 to play, and neither team could find the tiebreaker until the last minute, when Cox stepped up with his match-high fourth goal.

Chapman had the better of the play early, taking a 2-0 lead and maintaining that advantage at the end of the first (3-1) and second (5-3) quarters. Cox had both Sagehen goals in the second quarter to keep his team within striking distance. Senior Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) started the second half with a goal to pull Pomona-Pitzer within 5-4, and Hardman and Higgins both answered back after Chapman pushed the lead to two.

Pomona-Pitzer will face Air Force at home at 1 p.m. on Friday in a Western Water Polo Association match-up, before closing out the regular season against CMS on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Haldeman Pool.
