Sagehens Lose Close One To UC Davis, Fall To UC Irvine

La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell 12-10 to 12th-ranked UC Davis on Sunday morning at the Inland Empire Classic, before falling 19-10 to sixth-ranked UC Irvine in the afternoon.

With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 0-6 on the year with all six losses coming to nationally ranked teams, four of which are in the top 10 (No. 1 USC, No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 8 Long Beach State).

In the UC Davis match, the Sagehens trailed by three goals on three different occasions to the 12th-ranked Aggies, but pulled even at 10-10 when junior Dylan O'Connell (pictured - photo by Becky Gaut) scored on a long skip shot inside the left post with 4:41 to play.

UC Davis took the lead back with 3:27 left on a man-up goal from Teddy Nicholson, and the Sagehens missed a chance to tie when sophomore  Clayton Hardman hit the post with 2:10 left. The Aggies were then able to kill 1:35 off the clock by getting to three rebounds, before sophomore goalie Austin Strong made his second save of the possession with 36 seconds left and secured possession.

Pomona-Pitzer called timeout with one last chance to tie, but Colin Hicks stepped into the passing lane on a cross-pool pass for a steal, and the Aggies added an empty net goal with one second left for a 12-10 victory.

Sophomore Stephen Vint and junior Ryan Higgins each finished with two goals for Pomona-Pitzer, while six other players had a goal apiece. The Sagehens trailed 6-3 at the half, but got within 6-5 in a matter of seconds as they were awarded a five-meter shot for an unsportsmanlike foul at the end of the first half, which Higgins converted, and then added a man-up goal from senior Mark Hudnall 18 seconds into the half.

After trailing 10-8 going into the fourth quarter, freshman Phillip Clayman scored on a long skip to close to within 10-9, before O'Connell's tying goal. Pomona-Pitzer's only lead of the contest was 1-0 in the first quatrer on Vint's first goal.

The UC Irvine match saw the Sagehens take a first-quarter 3-2 lead with three straight goals, two of which came from senior defender Cody Moore, before Hudnall gave Pomona-Pitzer its first and only lead. The Anteaters then scored the next six goals before Vint ended the drought late in the first half to make the score 8-4.

Senior Jason Cox had two third-quarter goals, but UC Irvine's Bojan Hrlec closed out the third quarter with his sixth goal of the game to make the score 15-6. Travis Larsen, Trevor Roszkos, Vint and Clayman added fourth quarter goals for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it continues its daunting early schedule with a rematch against top-ranked USC in the first match of the NorCal Tournament, hosted by Stanford.
