Men's Water Polo Concludes Season With 11-8 Win Over Redlands

San Diego, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team used a 6-0 second half run to take control and capture an 11-8 win over Redlands in the seventh-place match at the WWPA Championships on Sunday morning.

Senior Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.) and juniors Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) and Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) each had two goals for the Sagehens, which outscored Redlands 4-0 in the third quarter and added two more in the fourth to complete the 6-0 run.

After trailing 6-5 at the half after Redlands' Clint Freeman scored with 36 second left in the second quarter, Pomona-Pitzer erupted for four third-quarter goals to take a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth. Moore started the rally with the tying goal, and Moler then scored with 3:47 left in the third to give the Sagehens the lead for good.

Cox followed with his second goal of the game to give Pomona-Pitzer an 8-6 lead, and freshman Kyle Van der Linde (Altadena, Calif.) capped off the third quarter with 38 seconds left. Freshman Travis Larsen (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and sophomore Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) tacked on fourth quarter goals to make the score 11-6, as the Sagehens had a 6-0 run with six different scorers.

Redlands scored two harmless goals in the final 1:39 to pull the final within 11-8. Blake vanHartesvelt and Clint Freeman each had two goals for the Bulldogs in a losing cause, while Tyler Abbott had nine saves.

Pomona-Pitzer concludes its season with a 15-20 record, including 9-1 in the SCIAC, which earned it its first conference championship since 2008.
