Stags Hold Off Second-Half Rally For 10-8 Win

Claremont, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps used a pair of lob shots in the fourth quarter to hold off a Pomona-Pitzer rally and capture a 10-8 win in a SCIAC Men's Water Polo match on Wednesday evening at Matt Axelrood Pool.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 5-14 on the season and an even 1-1 in the SCIAC after opening league play with a 15-8 win at Occidental last weekend.

Pomona-Pitzer led 3-2 after the first quarter, when sophomore Dylan O'Connell (River Forest, Ill. - pictured) broke a 2-2 tie with a man-up goal. The Stags, though, responded with a 4-0 second quarter, capped off by a rebound goal from Brian Chong after senior goalie Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) made an initial save, to take a 6-3 lead into intermission.

Freshman Stephen Vint (El Cajon, Calif.) had a pair of man-up goals in the third period to pull the Sagehens back within 7-6, but the Stags scored the final goal of the stanza.

John Holland then made the score 9-6 with 5:18 left in the fourth when he lobbed a long shot into the upper-right corner from the left side of the pool. The Sagehens responded with back-to-back goals from senior Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.) and O'Connell to make the score 9-8 and had the ball with a chance to tie, but did not get a quality shot off, and Mark Nietzel scored on another lob, this time from the right side of the pool into the upper-left corner, to make it 10-8 with 2:05 left.

Vint, O'Connell and Moler all had two goals for the Sagehens, while junior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) and freshman Travis Larsen (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) had one apiece.

The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday when they have two home matches - a SCIAC match with Whittier at 11 a.m. and a battle with Pac 10 power UCLA at 3 p.m.
