Hopkins Stems Off Late Sagehen Rally For 10-7 Win

Claremont, Calif. – Junior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md. - pictured) had three goals and an assist, but it was not enough as Johns Hopkins was able to pull away for a 10-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer on the first day of the Claremont Convergence on Friday evening at Haldeman Pool.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 2-13 on the year, after it defeated Chapman 17-14 in overtime in its first game of the day.

Johns Hopkins jumped out a quick 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the match, before Cox helped get the Sagehens right back in it by scoring his team's first three goals. The last of his hat trick made the score 4-3 early in the second quarter, but the Blue Jays answered back with a 3-0 run to take a 7-3 lead.

Freshman Clayton Hardman (Old Greenwich, Conn.) scored on a man-up situation in the final 30 seconds of the half to make the score 7-4 at intermission, but Johns Hopkins outscored Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 in the third quarter to go ahead 10-4. The Sagehens rallied with all three goals in the fourth quarter to get within 10-7 with 1:43 to play on a goal from sophomore Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) off a Cox pass, but could get no closer.

Cox had seven goals in the two matches on the day, as he scored four in the Chapman match and followed it up with three against Johns Hopkins. Junior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) added a fourth-quarter goal for the Sagehens, his fifth of the day, while junior Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) added his fourth of the day with 2:40 to play.

Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) finished with eight saves for the Sagehens, while Danny Ovelar had seven for the Blue Jays. Ross Schofield had three goals for Johns Hopkins, while Kielan Crow and Alex Whittiam each had two.
