Los Angeles, Calif – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team opened the 2011 season with a pair of contests against top-10 teams at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday, falling 15-4 to eighth-ranked Pepperdine and 16-4 to seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
In the Pepperdine match, the Sagehens received goals from Jason Cox, Clayton Hardman, Ryan Higgins and Travis Larsen. Three goalkeepers split action for Pomona-Pitzer, with Kyle Pokorny registering four saves, Austin Strong tallying three, and Tyler Hill adding two. Matthew DeTrane led a balanced offense for the Waves, tallying three goals, while Bence Valics had eight saves in goal for Pepperdine.
Against UC Santa Barabara, Cox found the back of the net three times for the Sagehens, while Higgins also added a goal. Hill had four saves in goal, Pokorny had three and Strong had two. UC Santa Barbara goalie Jay Lovero had 10 saves, while Chase Racich led the Gauchos offense with four goals.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday when it participates in the Inland Empire Tournament at La Verne and Redlands. Pomona-Pitzer will host its home opener on Saturday against UC San Diego at 12 noon, before facing UC Santa Barbara (at La Verne) at 4:30 p.m. Sunday's opponents at La Verne include UC Davis at 12:45 p.m. and Concordia (Calif.) at 4:30 p.m.
