CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split in their double header as they defeated Swarthmore 7-2 and fell to junior college Irvine Valley College 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 10-4 overall and remain 2-1 in conference play.
No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer 7, Swarthmore 2
The Sagehens began the match with a hot start during the doubles competition. Pomona-Pitzer successfully took all three doubles matches against the Garnet.
The team of sophomores Sam Gearou and Josh Gearou started the Sagehens out with a win in the No. 3 spot of doubles with an 8-4 victory and the doubles team of senior Graham Maassen and junior Marko Mandic followed that win up with an 8-3 win in the No. 2 doubles to give the Sagehens a quick 2-0 start.
The No. 1 team of seniors Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides capped off the sweep as they held on to finish off their opponents by the score of 8-5 as Pomona-Pitzer moved into singles play with a 3-0 lead.
The Sagehens got three wins early on in singles play against Swarthmore. Josh Gearou first took a win in the No. 4 singles as he quickly took care of his opponent by the score of 6-1, 6-3 and junior Sam Malech followed that up with a win in the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Mandic also went on to win his match in singles play at the No. 3 singles spot by the score of 6-1, 6-3.
Pomona-Pitzer claimed one more win in singles play that came in the No. 2 spot as Bello won a breaker in set one 7-6 (4), and went on to win the second set 7-5 to take a 7-0 lead over Swarthmore.
The Garnet won their only two matches of the afternoon as Maassen fell in the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 and Sam Gearou fell at No. 6, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer 2, Irvine Valley College 7
The Sagehens fell in two out of the three doubles matches to begin the match against Irvine Valley College. The Sagehens fell in a close match at No. 2 doubles as Kalyan Chadalavada and Avery Bicks fell 9-8. Josh Kim and Malech lost in No. 3 doubles 8-2 and the Sagehens won their only doubles match with the team of Simonides and Bello earning the win at 8-4 and trailed 2-1 heading into singles.
After falling behind in doubles the Sagehens only took one of the six singles matches against Irvine Valley. Sam Gearou took the sole victory as he defeated his opponent quickly by the score of 6-1, 6-1 to earn the point for Pomona-Pitzer.
Bello fell at the No. 1 singles spot by the score of 6-1, 6-3 and Josh Gearou fell at No. 2 6-0, 6-1. Simonides and Quinn Hirsohn both fell in their singles match at in the third set and Jonathan Miller fell at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
