LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team lost 1-0 in a last minute thriller to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 1-4-1 on the year and open SCIAC play 0-1.
The Sagehens' offense bothered the La Verne keeper all night long as the Sagehens outshot the Leopards 18-9 and put 10 balls on target. The Sagehens had a good opportunity to score in the 74th minute after a mistake by the La Verne keeper gave the Sagehens an indirect free kick inside the box. The Sagehens played the ball off but the shot was blocked by traffic inside the box and the Leopards cleared to avoid another scoring opportunity.
While the Sagehens doubled the amount of shots taken by the Leopards, La Verne changed the game with one minute remaining in the second half after Jovanni Garcia dribbled into the box and place a ball in the top left corner of the goal to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the game.
Immediately following the goal, the Sagehens quickly went on the attacked and had a great opportunity to score after a rocketed shot from outside the box was stopped by a diving save and a follow up shot clanked off of the crossbar as the Leopards held on for the win at home.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Chapman on Saturday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m.
