Men's Soccer: Second Half Heroics By Sagehens Tame Bulldogs 3-1

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer Team saw it's offense come to life against a gritty University of Redlands team, dancing to a 3-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Daven Crossland, Eamon Stein, and Aidan Ferrer had a goal each while Bryan Diangson delivered six saves. The two sides were even-keeled for majority of the game, as the Sagehens took 15 shots while the Bulldogs had 14. However, some late second half heroics by the Sagehens' offense made the difference in the end.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve their record to 4-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens' offense tried to find its spark in the early first half, and in the 10th they almost threatened. Eamon Stein took a loose ball in the left wing and delivered a deflected cross into the box. Bjorn SIgurddson rose for the header, but his attempt went straight to the keeper's hands. Later in the 12th, Sigurddson had another header attempt thanks to a cross by Taylor Reifert, but the shot went just high. In the 18th minute, Redlands came close to scoring when Redlands' Antony Chonga won the ball in the left wing and dribbled past his defender go one-on-one with the goalie. However, Bryan Diangson dove just in time to block the shot to preserve the shutout. Aidan Ferrer came close to giving the Sagehens the lead when he broke free down the middle after receiving a through ball and shot the ball after taking one touch, but his attempt went wide. Redlands almost struck in the 38th minute when Antonio Chavez won loose ball in the Sagehens' box and attempted a shot, but Max DeWit slid in front of Chavez and blocked the shot with his body.

SIgurddson almost found the opening goal in the start of the second half when he dove in the box and connected off a cross by Ferrer with his head; however, his attempt deflected off the keeper's gloves for the corner. In the 10th minute, Redlands' Jonathan Cheung ripped a laser from the edge of the box, but Diangson dove with outstretched arms to block the shot. The Sagehens broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when Daven Crossland broke free in the top right corner of the box and slipped a low shot past the rushing keeper for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, the Sagehens made it double when Eamon Stein took a short pass from Peter Heckendorn in the left side of the box and ripped a low shot at a tight angle.

However, the game got close when Redlands cut the lead in half with a goal in the 71st minute. Crossland almost put the Sagehens ahead by two again in the 79th minute when he raced down the right wing and received a pass from Ferrer. The junior took his shot, but the attempt was blocked by the keeper. Diangson provided more heroics in the 81st minute when Chonga curled a free kick at goal, only for the keeper to make an acrobatic save. In the 90th minute, Ferrer raced after a loose ball in the left wing and dribbled into the box. Ferrer delivered the dagger as his shot rolled beneath the keeper and into the net to make it 3-1.
