Men's Soccer: Bill Swartz Earns 400th Career Win As Sagehens Sweep Stags

CLAREMONT, CA. – Head Coach Bill Swartz earned his 400th career win as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated SCIAC rival CMS 2-1 to cap off a sweep in the Sixth Street Rivalry.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens sweep the Sixth Street Rivalry over CMS and improve to 5-3-2 overall and 4-2-2 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by senior Ethan Flor and junior Taylor Reifert who each scored a goal in the win over the Stags while senior Peter Rentzepis tallied both assists in the game.  Senior Ben Mitchell earned the win in goal for the Sagehens as he tallied four stops.

The Sagehens got out to an early lead at home as they quickly executed their game plan against the Stags when Rentzpetis crossed in a ball to a rising Flor who struck it with his head past the goalkeeper to put the Sagehens up 1-0 in the fourth minute.

Pomona-Pitzer wasn't satisfied with just the one goal in the first half as they found the net again just 12 minutes later after Rentzepis found Reifert streaking through the defense. Reifert was able to draw the goalkeeper out of his post and chipped in a lob over the keeper and into the goal to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute.

The Sagehens fought off the Stags in the remainder of the first half and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

CMS opened up the second half with a sense of urgency as they looked to climb back into the match. The Stags became the more aggressive team in the second half as they tried desperately to avoid the sweep against Pomona-Pitzer for the first time in over ten years.  They finally found a goal from Isaiah Alba in the 67th minute to cut the lead down to 1-0 to put pressure on Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehen defense stayed strong but had a scare when the Stags got a clean look at a header that was pushed out by an acrobatic save by Mitchell but a follow up shot was heading towards goal until freshman Alfred Molina slid in and knocked the ball away to spoil what was the last chance for CMS to find an equalizer.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Occidental on Wednesday, October 11th at 4:00 p.m.
