Men's Soccer: Ferrer and Reifert Lead Sagehens Past Kingsmen, 2-1

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-3-1 overall and now 2-2-1 in SCIAC play while Cal Lutheran drops to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play this season.

The Sagehens were led by junior Aidan Ferrer and junior Taylor Reifert who each netted a goal in the win.  Senior Ben Mitchell earned the win in goal as he tallied two saves for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer came out and went after the Kingsmen in today's match as they were the aggressors early on. The Sagehens earned the upper hand early on in the match as they took advantage of a turnover by the Kingsmen and senior Jacob Merkle set up Ferrer for the first goal of the afternoon in just the fifth minute of the match to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

Cal Lutheran got back on track and scored an equalizer in the first half as Diego Ortega scored a goal off of an assist from Stevie Ray Trujillo to even the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute. The offenses cooled off late in the first half as the two teams went into halftime even at 1-1.

Pomona-Pitzer's defense was solid in the second half as the Kinsgmen fired off eight shots in the second half but the Sagehens were able to limit the amount of good looks from the Cal Lutheran offense.

The Sagehens finally scored their go-ahead goal in the 58th minute as Ferrer broke free down the right side and sent in a cross that found Reifert who found the back of the net to put Pomona-Pitzer on top 2-1.

The Kingsmen tried desperately to climb back into the game late in the second half but Mitchell and the Sagehen defense held off the Kingsmen for their second SCIAC win of the year.
