CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team opened up 2017 with a shutout win over non-conference opponent Willamette on Friday night at the South Athletics Complex.
Ben Mitchell earned his first shutout win of 2017 as the senior saved his only shot attempt on goal and played all 90 minutes in goal.
Both defensive units held strong in the first half as the shots were only 4-3 in favor of Willamette and each team only tallied two corner kicks a piece in the first half. The two teams went into the half tied at 0-0, but the first break of the match came as the Sagehens drew a penalty in the box and Ferrer was able to capitalize with his first goal of the season on a penalty kick to put the Sagehens up 1-0.
After going on top the Sagehens tightened up on defense and only allowed one shot from the Willamette offense in the second half. The Sagehens would then double up their lead after Taylor Reifert blasted a wonder goal from outside the box that landed in the upper 90 to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead in the 66th minute.
The Sagehens impressed in their first time out in 2016 but next open up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they travel to Chapman on Wednesday, September 6th at 4:00 p.m.
