La Verne, Calif. - Freshman forward Peter Rentzepis (pictured) scored his first two collegiate goals, including the golden goal with 1:45 left in the first overtime, to give the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team a 2-1 road win over La Verne on Wednesday.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-1-1 overall and remain unbeaten in SCIAC play at 2-0-1. La Verne falls to 4-3-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The game-winning goal came in the 99th minute as senior midfielder Avery Raimondo made a run just outside the right edge of the penalty area. He chipped a cross into the middle, and Rentzepis was there on the receiving end inside the top of the six-yard box to head the ball home inside the near post for his second goal of the game.
Rentzepis also scored the first goal of the contest midway through the first half when he got a clean look from inside the box after a scrum and was able to bury the shot for his first collegiate goal. That goal held up until the second half, when Mario Interiano leveled the score for La Verne in the 65h minute, putting home a rebound after the Leopards' initial shot was deflected.
Pomona-Pitzer nearly had the golden goal early in the overtime as senior midfielder Nathan Shekita made a run up the middle through traffic, but his low shot went about a foot wide of the left post.
The Sagehens finished with a 14-12 edge in shots on the day, including 3-0 in the decisive overtime. Senior goalie Nigel Brady had two saves in net for the Sagehens, while La Verne's two goalies combined for four saves.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
