Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team scored three goals in a 17-minute span to turn a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead and went on to take a 4-2 win over Caltech on Monday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Arash Mahboubi (pictured) and freshman midfielder Jk Gopakumar each had a goal and an assist for the Sagehens, who improve to 4-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the SCIAC. Caltech falls to 0-11 overall and 0-9 in league play.
The Sagehens took a 1-0 lead at the 13:33 mark of the first half when freshman midfielder Matty Marvin played Mahboubi in behind the defense, and Mahboubi tucked a shot past onrushing Caltech goalie John David Feist and inside the left post.
That would be the only goal of the first half for Pomona-Pitzer, which held a 17-1 edge in shots in the opening stanza, but couldn't pick up an insurance goal. That proved to be temporarily costly, as the Sagehens were whistled for a hand ball in the box 10 minutes into the second half, and Marec Serlin blasted a penalty kick into the upper-right corner to tie the score 1-1 on only the second shot of the game for the Beavers.
Pomona-Pitzer regrouped, though, and tallied the go ahead goal less than seven minutes later, as senior forward Ian Maier got on the back end of a Nathan Shekita cross in front of the goal and flicked it inside the near post at the 62:02 mark.
The Sagehens tacked on an insurance goal at the 75:32 mark when Gopakumar turned the corner inside the box, and lofted a chip pass to the far post over the head of Feist. Senior midfielder Drew Lind got on the back end of the cross and easily headed it in from inside the goalmouth to make the score 3-1.
Just 4:15 later, Gopakumar stretched the lead to 4-1 when he got to a through ball from junior forward Lawrence McDonald behind the defense, and one-timed a shot around a charging Feist and inside the right post with 10:13 left.
Caltech added a second goal late to make the score 4-2 when Evren Gokcen sent a long free kick into the middle of the penalty area, where it fell between several bodies. Juan Pablo Campo was the first one there for the Beavers, and he slotted a shot home from 12 yards out to close out the scoring with 8:26 left on the clock.
Pomona-Pitzer finished with a 29-5 edge in shots and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks. Feist had eight saves for the Beavers in the loss.
The Sagehens will be back in action this Saturday when they entertain Whittier for an 11 a.m. contest.
