Claremont, Calif. - Playing with only four freshman in its line-up, the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Golf team opened the 2013 season by staying within six points of Chapman and Whittier at Via Verde Country Club.

Chapman and Whittier, who each brought six golfers, tied for first place with 324 points and Chapman was declared the winner due to the higher fifth-place score. Pomona-Pitzer was close behind with 330.

Freshman Guy Thyer (pictured making a birdie putt on the ninth hole) was the top Sagehen with an 80, just three shots behind the leader (Chris Lungo of Chapman). Jordan Fox was right behind with an 81, Kevin Knox had an 83 and Mitchell Weeks finished with an 86 as all four freshmen were within six shots of each other.

Only two golfers shot below 80 in breezy conditions at Via Verde. Ricky Macias had a 79 for Whittier to come in second, while Thyer two other Poets for third.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action this weekend for the first SCIAC Tournament (36 holes) on Saturday and Sunday at Industry Hills in Rancho Cucamonga.
