Men's Basketball: Sagehens Bounce Back With 70-59 Win Over Caltech

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 70-59 on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by senior Micah Elan who went for a team-high 19 points and added six rebounds and six assists as well.  Junior Alex Preston returned to the lineup for 17 points and nine boards while senior James Kelbert chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.

The Sagehens had a slow start on offense in the first half but some good second half shooting was able to give them the edge over the Beavers as they fired 45.8% from beyond the arc.  Pomona-Pitzer outrebounded Caltech 51-35 but not too many points in the paint between the two teams with the Sagehens at 20 and the Beavers at 16.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a 7-5 lead within the first two minutes of the game, but the offense froze at that point as the Beavers took a 14-7 lead with the Sagehens failing to score a basket until 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The Sagehens came back with a three from Kelbert to cut the lead down to 14-12 and then a senior Jack Boyle three gave the Sagehens back the lead at 17-16 with 8:54 left until halftime.  Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to 25-19 but the Beavers came back late and took over the lead at 28-27 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens broke out of their shooting slump early in the second half and after a few made threes forced Caltech to call a timeout with a 41-31 lead with 14.59 left to play.  The Sagehens continued their hot shooting from beyond the arc and went on to take their largest lead of the game at 59-42 with 6:48 left to go.

The Beavers made a late run and got the lead down to single digits at 63-55 but the Sagehens stayed solid at the free throw line and hung on to the win at home.
