Men's Basketball: Sagehens Fall To Redlands, 94-77

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands 94-77 on Saturday night at Currier Gym.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 15-5 on the year and 9-3 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by senior Micah Elan who tallied a team-high 23 points with five assists. Sophomore Matthew Eberle and first-year Brendan Mora each had 16 points and senior James Kelbert chipped in with 12 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs had a great night shooting the basketball to give them the edge over the Sagehens in this one as they shot 46.3% from the floor and 46.2% from three hitting on 12 of their 26 attempts.  The Bulldogs were also incredibly accurate from the free throw line as they converted 20 of their 22 attempts.

Redlands got out to a good start as they began the game with a 10-2 lead and forced the Sagehens to take a timeout with 13:30 left to go in the first half.  The Sagehens regrouped and came back to tie the game at 10-10 after a three by Eberle but the Bulldogs wouldn't let the Sagehens take the lead and built their advantage back up to 28-19 with just under four minutes to play before halftime. Although the Sagehens were down for the entire first half, Pomona-Pitzer sprung a late run and took their first lead of the game with seconds to go before halftime after an Elan jumper put the Sagehens on top 32-31 at halftime.

The Sagehens stayed close with the Bulldogs early on in the second half but the Bulldogs began to heat up from beyond the arc.  Redlands converted some baskets on consecutive possessions and took a 10-point lead at 48-38 with five minutes gone in the second half.  Pomona-Pitzer came back and cut the lead down to two points at 50-48, but the Bulldogs took off again with some excellent shooting and eventually grew their lead to 79-66 with under five minutes to play.

Pomona-Pitzer tried to stay with Redlands late in the second half but the hot shooting from the Bulldogs proved to be the difference as the Sagehens fell on the road.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Caltech on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m.
