CLAREMONT, CA. – Senior Micah Elan dropped a new career-high with 41 points as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 109-83 on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Elan who had a career-high 41 points, which is one point off of the record currently set earlier in the year by junior Alex Preston. First-year Brendan Mora also had a career-high with a high of 20 points and eight rebounds while senior Adam Rees had 15 and senior James Kelbert chipped in with 12.
The Sagehens had a nice night shooting the basketball with 64.1% from the field and 36.8% from three. The Sagehens also outrebounded the Leopards 32-24 and forced the Leopards to turn the ball over 14 times and scored 29 points off of turnovers.
Despite the lopsided victory, the Leopards stayed with the Sagehens for the better part of the first half. La Verne held a slight lead early on as they shot very well from three early in the ball game. La Verne held a 16-14 lead just about five minutes into the game while the Sagehens then went on an 11-3 run capped off by an Elan jumper with 12:35 to go.
The Leopards battled back and got the lead down to just 38-35 in favor of the Sagehens but Pomona-Pitzer closed out the half strong to take a 54-46 lead heading into the locker room.
La Verne came out strong in the second half and cut the lead down to just four points at 62-58 but the Sagehens took off and sparked a 23-8 run and took an 85-66 lead with 9:25 left to play. The Sagehens kept their feet on the gas and Elan eclipsed the 40-point mark for the first time in his career with a three-pointer with 2:28 left to play to push the Sagehens' lead to 106-79, their largest lead of the night.
